ด้วยตระหนักถึงการเปลี่ยนแปลง และศักยภาพของเทคโนโลยีสารสนเทศเชิงพื้นที่ดังกล่าว PYTHAGORAS-SEA หรือ ศูนย์วิจัยภูมิสารสนเทศ เพื่อประเทศไทย จึงได้จัดตั้งขึ้นเพื่อเป็นศูนย์วิจัยที่ให้ความรู้ทางวิชาการและการศึกษา วิจัยทางด้านการประยุกต์ใช้ภูมิสารสนเทศโดยเฉพาะ GPS, GIS และ RS โดยมีวัตถุประสงค์เพื่อยกระดับองค์ความรู้ในการประยุกต์ใช้ และเผยแพร่องค์ความรู้ดังกล่าวในการบริหารจัดการ การวางแผนและการตัดสินใจทั้งในการพัฒนาและการแก้ไขปัญหา การนำไปใช้อย่างมีกลยุทธ์ รวมถึงการพัฒนายุทธศาสตร์รองรับที่เหมาะสม โดยเฉพาะและสารสนเทศเชิงพื้นที่ เพื่อให้เกิดการพัฒนาที่พอเพียงและยั่งยืน
